What is "Coining"?
"Coining" is a long-standing tradition in the military. Its origins trace back to World War I. Challenge coins serve as powerful symbols of membership, camaraderie, and belonging. They are also used to honor achievements, dedication, and exemplary service.

"As the director of NDSU Bison Strides, I was honored to receive a coin from Tim Kuhn after our two organizations hosted an Open House for military service members, Veterans and their families. Bison Strides is an equine assisted services program that partners horses and humans for healing. We serve individuals with disabilities, as well as offer a Military and Veterans Horsemanship program for those who have served and continue to serve our country. As prey animals, horses are highly tuned into our behaviors, which often reflect our emotional state. Horses are non-judgmental and demand we be present and mindful in relationship with one another. These skills are vital in human relationships too. Our hope is that more Veterans and service members find Bison Strides and have the opportunity to experience the therapeutic power of horse. We are humbled to support defenders of our nation through horsemanship, and so very grateful for our new found relationship with Heroes Compass. We look forward to staying connected and serving our community heroes. Thank you!" - Dr. Erika Berg, NDSU
